Like many women, I had no idea what to expect when I entered perimenopause. I had made some lifestyle changes that virtually eliminated PMS, so I thought I’d sail right through “The Change”.
HAH!
For most of my life I had an excellent memory, and although I would struggle with focus (thanks, ADD!). Still, I was a high-performing adult. I helped run grassroots organizations, grew my home business, homeschooled my 5 children (that's a story, right there!), was active in church and all the family things. But now, trying to remember the simplest things that used to be easy, became a stressful challenge.
Almost without warning, my memory flew out the window. I was afraid to tell anyone, certainly not co-workers or clients!
How could I tell them:
-
sometimes I couldn't remember their names, even if I'd known them for years
-
dropping words and thoughts mid-sentence - in a business meeting!
-
why did I walk in the room again?
It was terrifying! Was dementia in my future?
It was about that time I made additional changes specifically for improving brain health. Within a few days, I started feeling more like me and my memory improved! I never got another prescription refill for ADD meds.
Fast forward and now I'm in my 60's and feel like I'm in my 40's - without the menopause challenges! My memory came back and my focus isn't perfect, but it's good! I've been down the road and I love to encourage other women sharing what I’ve learned. I’m a strong believer in Titus 2:2 from the Bible, that older women should share and mentor what they’ve learned with other women.
